Money for expansion and investments

ÖBB will invest almost three billion euros per year in the railway infrastructure for the next six years. By 2026 it will be 17,500 million euros. For the federal state of Salzburg, the new master plan means an investment boost of 608 million euros.

Priorities for Salzburg include making the Ennstalbahn more attractive from Bischofshofen and the extension and electrification of the Mattigtalbahn.

  • Ennstalbahn: Bischofshofen – Stainach-Irdning: Attractive
  • Commissioning: 2028
  • Mattig Valley Railroad Expansion – 3-Way Expansion
  • Golling-Abtenau – Sulzau: Line upgrade in the Golling area
  • Capacity optimization in Steindorf near Straßwalchen – Salzburg main station
  • Seekirchen Süd construction, Zell am See Schüttdorf stops.

The number of passengers in ÖBB collapsed due to the corona virus

A total of 1.8 billion euros will be used to modernize and electrify regional railways. Investments also primarily benefit small and medium-sized enterprises, creating additional local added value and jobs.

As a result of the corona pandemic, the number of passengers on the Bundesbahn fell by 37 percent from January to September, and freight traffic fell by 10 to 15 percent. Currently, the trend is lateral or increasing slightly. The travel advisories would have once again dampened long-distance traffic. “He will not fall into the abyss,” assured ÖBB boss Andreas Matthä. There are already growth forecasts for the time after Corona.

Promotion of the electrification of regional railways

The new master plan includes more S-Bahn trains in and around cities, with a focus on the eastern region on the main rapid transit route. In addition, regional railways are becoming more attractive and electrification is being promoted, for example with the Grazer Ostbahn or the Traisentalbahn. Digitization and efficiency gains will also be intensified. About a third of the € 17.5 billion will go to the large Brennerbasistunnel, Semmeringbasistunnel and Koralmbahn tunnel projects. Other focal points: “Park and Ride” and acoustic protection, station conversions and route extensions.
