In addition to the growing number of new infections, the number of Covid 19 patients in hospitals is suddenly skyrocketing.
More than 2,100 new corona infections were reported in Austria on Sunday. An immensely high value considering that the weekend numbers are always slightly lower than during the week due to fewer tests evaluated. For the first time, more than 2,000 new cases were registered on a Sunday in 2021. But the development of corona patients in national hospitals is really worrying and not entirely insignificant for the decision on possible additional opening steps.
Almost three weeks after opening steps in stores and schools, 1,291 hospital beds were occupied by Covid-19 patients on Sunday. That’s 25 more than Saturday. There has also been a significant increase in intensive care units. 15 people had to be transferred to an intensive care bed in the last 24 hours, a total of 279 people today. In the last week alone, that means a nine percent increase.
More than 14,000 cases in just one week
In the past seven days, 14,066 new corona cases have been confirmed in Austria. Currently 20,464 people are actively ill, 589 more than on Saturday. The last time there was a similar number was exactly seven weeks ago. On January 10, 20,250 active patients were counted. The reason for the increase in this area can be explained by the number of people who have recovered. The 2,123 new infections are compared to “just” 1,511 people who consider themselves healthy again.
Since Monday, the number of Covid-19-related deaths has risen by 175 cases, with 23 deaths from Saturday to Sunday alone. A total of 8,561 have officially died of Corona in Austria since the start of the pandemic. That’s 96.2 deaths per crown per 100,000 residents. There are proven cases of corona in Austria 459,440. 430,415 of these are considered to have recovered.
