The Austrian federal government announces new measures to combat the corona pandemic. The most important points had already been made public on Friday and throughout Saturday.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said that it will not be allowed to exceed intensive care capacities in hospitals. For this reason, there will be another blockade with restrictions in many areas. Kurz spoke of “dramatic cuts in our social life” and “dramatic cuts for the affected industries.”

For the economy there will be a large aid package in which 80 percent of sales will be replaced by the state. Companies that receive subsidies must provide a job guarantee for their employees. The economy must be maintained as well as possible. Industry and production must be kept open. Unlike the first blockade, commerce and “personal services” also remain open.

There must be a nightly curfew between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am, there is a ban on visiting other homes. The restaurant sector will be closed, with the hotel industry there are exceptions for business travelers. In contrast to the lockdown in spring, retail will remain open.

Cultural events and popular sports are prohibited, you can continue to practice professional sports. The schools remain open, but the upper levels will again become distance education. Kindergartens and lower grades remain open. High school and college students are sent to distance education.

In general, the contacts should be reduced. “Most of the discoveries are made with people who know each other,” Kurz said. For this reason, only people from two households can meet, regardless of how many people live in that household.
