The corona test must be carried out as soon as possible at the airport or other border crossing and no later than one day after arrival in the Scandinavian country, the Norwegian government announced on Thursday. Anyone who violates it risks being fined. Children under the age of twelve are exempt from the test.
There are other exceptions for mission-critical employees and cross-border travelers. As part of the measure, several smaller border crossings will be closed.
Prime Minister Erna Solberg explained that Norway had two concerns about imported coronavirus cases: On the one hand, they were concerned about outbreaks of new mutated coronavirus variants that could be more contagious than the previous form. On the other hand, many people returned to Norway from countries with significantly more infections after Christmas.
In a European comparison, Norway has weathered the Crown crisis quite well. In terms of population, the non-EU country currently has one of the lowest numbers of new infections in the European Economic Area (EEA) along with Finland, Iceland and Greece.
