In a nutshell, the FPÖ announced on Thursday evening that Norbert Hofer will step down from the FPÖ Burgenland chairmanship and hand it over to the member of state parliament Alexander Petschnig. The reason for this is the “recovery from the state elections”, the FPÖ party leader appealed to the growing polls: “I gave the state party start-up help and want to fully concentrate on federal political tasks.”
Hofer had only been elected as the new Burgenland party leader at a state party congress in March this year, and Petschnig his deputy. Since the defeats in the state elections and the end of the red-blue coalition, things have been fermenting in the FPÖ Burgenland.
Internal cross sections
So there were repeated cross shots by former member of the state parliament Manfred Haidinger, both at former party leader Johann Tschürtz, who is still president of the FPÖ club, and at the party leadership. Haidinger even ran against Hofer for the presidential election in the state party congress and had won 24 percent.
Petschnig, who was born in Carinthia and was a councilor for economy and tourism, will now have to deal with Haidinger and other internal party conflicts. The course for his rise to the top of the state party should have already been set in the context of the last meeting of the party’s executive in early October.
