Anschober in the talk AUSTRIA: Far from hospital collapse ++ Objective: reduce the number of cases by half.

Vienna. The Minister of Health, Rudi Anschober, in the big interview from AUSTRIA.

AUSTRIA: How do you see the situation in Corona? There were 714 new cases on Saturday.

RUDOLF ANSCHOBER: The strong rise that began on September 7 and 8 was very worrying. We have now managed to stop this increase and, at a still too high level, stabilize the number of infections.

AUSTRIA: Why do you think it went up like this?

PUSH: A combination of returning travelers with regional groups. Then, après-sport parties after regional sporting events. Also, closed societies and private parties bypass the curfew.

AUSTRIA: Are you afraid of more increases?

PUSH: We have achieved some stabilization for a week. But we have to significantly reduce the number of infections again.

AUSTRIA: What is realistic for Vienna and company to lose their red status abroad again?

PUSH: That has to go in the direction of halving.

AUSTRIA: No more than 300, 350 new cases per day?

PUSH: I agree. Then we would have air for the infection phase in fall and winter, when everyone is inside.

AUSTRIA: Is stabilization related to these stricter measures?

PUSH: Not yet, there is always a delay of two to three weeks. However, I am confident that, therefore, the figures will fall again significantly in the first half of October.

AUSTRIA: So now is the turning point?

PUSH: We are at a fork in the road. Best case: stabilization and gradual improvement. Worst case: 2,500 cases a day.

AUSTRIA: And that would be a blockade then?

PUSH: No, we will and we want to avoid it with all our might.

AUSTRIA: But when would a second lockdown really be necessary?

PUSH: When we completely lose control. And if the hospital system collapses, this is also stipulated in the Covid Law. But we are far from that.

AUSTRIA: The Covid law with the traffic light applies now. And each country does something different. It is chaotic.

PUSH: No, we have clear central federal measures from mouth protection to small events. This now requires additional regional measures in higher risk areas that are specifically tailored to regional outbreaks.

AUSTRIA: Why didn’t you decide on the traffic light in summer, then it would have worked in September?

PUSH: We decided it at the end of July and we prepared it in August. Our traffic light is a unique form of risk analysis that will be very important to us.

AUSTRIA: The Chancellor admitted that he would have liked to see stricter measures sooner. An open conflict?

PUSH: There are always situations in a coalition where you want the same thing, but there are discussions about when. And so far we have always done it very well together. Austria has weathered the crisis well so far.

AUSTRIA: It was felt that the Chancellor had slowed the traffic lights with the new setting.

PUSH: No, we are acting very well coordinated as a team in this very serious health crisis.

AUSTRIA: Regarding testing: Why are countries failing to meet their 48 hour limit from testing to outcome?

PUSH: Most of them do now. We had discussions with the federal states over the summer and it became clear that staff increases were needed. Some have done very well. Vorarlberg goes from test to decision in 20 hours. That’s great.

AUSTRIA: Vienna is just now stocking up, so somehow they missed it.

PUSH: In the case of Vienna, I would have liked to see a significant increase in staff earlier. Because it is a huge challenge for the health authorities in Vienna: 300 to 400 cases a day with 30 contact persons.
