At least two people were killed in a knife attack in Nice. This was reported by local police sources. Several people were injured in the attack near the Notre-Dame church in the southern French city, he said.
The Paris counter-terrorism prosecutor took over the investigation of the case. Among other things, it is about the murder charge in connection with a terrorist project, said the authority.
The alleged perpetrator was arrested according to the city administration. According to the AP news agency, a female police officer said the perpetrator was injured in the arrest and was taken to hospital.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the incident without giving any details and said an emergency meeting had been called. The police are investigating the case. Police advised avoiding the area but did not comment on the details.
“Everything points to a terrorist attack,” wrote the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, on Twitter.
Darmanin had repeatedly warned of the high risk of terrorism in the country. Just two weeks ago a professor was beheaded in a Paris suburb. The crime had caused horror throughout the country. Tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity.
