New York is preparing for the heaviest snowfall in years: In Central Park in Manhattan on Monday night (local time) already more than 40 centimeters of snowannounced the United States National Weather Service (NHS). According to weather forecasts, the snowpack in the east coast metropolis could be more than 50 centimeters high by Wednesday.
NHS meteorologist Matthew Wunsch said New York sI look forward to one of the heaviest snowfalls of all time. Since meteorological records began in 1869, Central Park’s snowpack has only been eight times more than 50 centimeters high. The previous snow record was set in January 2016 when nearly 70 centimeters of fresh snow fell in three days.
Canceled flights
The NHS warns of heavy snowfall and strong winds across the entire northeast coast of the United States from Virginia to Maine. More than 1,600 flights were canceled, most at airports in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington.
The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has already declared a state of emergency. Roads were kept clear for the use of rescue vehicles and all unnecessary travel was prohibited. With many people already working at home due to the corona pandemic, there were almost only cleaning vehicles on the streets amid heavy snowfall.
All schools were also closed Tuesday and planned corona vaccines were postponed. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned of a “dangerous and life-threatening situation.”
