As of October 1, all vehicle taxes are CO2 dependent.
If you want to buy a new car with great power and high CO2 emissions, you need to hurry with the registration. Because of October 1, 2020 it becomes more expensive for most of the owners of such vehicles. Then the new calculation method for motor-related insurance tax (mVst) comes into play. Those who are interested in an inexpensive car, on the other hand, drive better for tax purposes with a first registration after the deadline.
The new calculation takes into account CO2 emissions
The mVSt is continually collected from each car owner along with the liability insurance premium. In the case of cars, their level was previously based solely on engine power. As of October 1, 2020, the CO2 emissions indicated in the vehicle documents will also be used for the calculation. Therefore, an individual calculation for each model makes sense, as the engine power and CO2 values must be taken into account in combination. With an output of more than 170 grams of CO2 per kilometer however, the tax is always higher under the new calculation method. The opposite applies: for new cars with CO2 emissions of less than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer, we recommend that you do the initial registration only after the change. The future calculation scheme has an advantageous effect here. This makes running costs cheaper, especially for smaller, more efficient cars, but generally more expensive for trucks, SUVs, and company.

Examples
To show how much the price increase or savings can generate per year, we have selected two examples for each scenario. Anyone for the Mercedes Lessons
with 435 HP and all-wheel drive (S500 4 Matic), you pay a vehicle tax if you are registered before October 1 2,540 euros by year. Since the luxury sedan’s CO2 emissions are 192 grams per km, according to the new calculation scheme 2,869 euros road tax due per year. The opposite is true for the new Toyota Hybrid yaris
outside. The small Japanese car has CO2 emissions of 73 g / km. The current vehicle tax is here 320 euros. If you register the Yaris Hybrid after October 1, only 87 euros due per year. In the seat Ateca
With a 150 hp diesel, all-wheel drive and dual clutch transmission (2.0 TDI 4Drive DSG), CO2 emissions are 187 g / km. The Spanish compact SUV currently pays a vehicle tax of 650 euros per year, there will be a lot in the future 1,010 euros. The plug-in hybrid models, on the other hand, perform especially well due to their unrealistic standard consumption, in which the electric range is fully taken into account for the first 100 km. With the 141 hp Kia Ceed SW Plug-in-Hybrid
(29 g / km) the annual vehicle tax is reduced for a new registration after October 1, 601 euros in 380 euros.
Not retrospectively
The new regulation applies to all first registrations from October 1, 2020. On the one hand, this means that nothing will change for all vehicles registered until then. On the other hand, consumers should keep an eye on the CO2 emissions of the car of their dreams, and therefore the level of the tax burden, when buying new and used cars, according to the ÖAMTC in a transmission.
