In the last 24 hours there was a new record in Austria with 1,235 new coronavirus infections. According to the Ministry of Health and the Interior, the number of active cases amounted to 10,742. But the numbers are also increasing rapidly across Europe, as Health Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens) emphasized via Twitter.

So far, 852 deaths have been reported in Austria, ten more than the day before. The number of hospital patients remained stable in 509 patients, 99 of them intensive. So far, 54,423 positive test results have been obtained in Austria (as of Saturday 9:30 am So, in one day there were 20,016 test results. 42,829 people in Austria have recovered after an infection.

Highest increase in new infections in Vienna

Most of the increases were in Vienna with 511 new infections, on Friday there were 392 new cases. In Lower Austria, 187 were recently infected, in Upper Austria 174, in Tirol 93, in Styria 88, in Salzburg 72, in Vorarlberg 40, in Carinthia 38 and in Burgenland 32.

In Vienna there are also more people actively suffering from the disease. At this moment there are 5,300 people, yesterday Friday there were 5,088. The city also wants to further increase testing capacities with newly installed containers. With the newly added disease cases, a total of 20,067 verifiably confirmed coronavirus infections have so far been recorded in Vienna. Additionally, an 89-year-old woman and a 97-year-old man, both with previous illnesses, have died in the last 24 hours. This means that there are now 271 Covid-19 related deaths in Vienna. 14,496 people are healthy again. 6,000 tests were conducted on Friday, the total number is currently 509,414 in the federal capital.

In Burgenland there were 422 test results, in Carinthia there were 752 tests. 3,399 tests were carried out in Lower Austria, 2,065 in Upper Austria, 1,327 in Salzburg and 1,921 in Tyrol. Styria reported 2,521 tests and Vorarlberg 1,609.

Increase in the number of coronavirus infections in Europe

The Agency for Food Safety and Health (AGES) released the effective breeding number for the period September 25-October 7 on Friday night, and there was no good news. In all of Austria it was 1.13, and in no federal state was it less than one. An effective reproduction number of exactly one would mean that someone infected with the coronavirus infects a person with SARS-CoV-2. If the number is above one, the virus will multiply; if it is below one, the virus will be contained.

Health Minister Anschober called the development via Twitter worrisome for the whole of Europe and noted the increasing number of cases in Austrian nursing homes. For other European countries, the department head gave the following partially rounded numbers of new infections in one day: France 20,000, Spain 12,000, Italy 5,300, Germany 4,900, Holland 6,000, Belgium 5,300, Czech Republic 8,600, Switzerland 1,487, Hungary 1,176 and Slovakia 1,184.

Anschober again appealed for basic precautionary measures to be taken. “Protection is simple: hygiene measures, minimum distance, MNS (mouth and nose protection, note) where necessary, avoid crowds, ventilate regularly. If we all participate, we will do it right,” the Health Minister tweeted and also recommended use the crown stop app.
