According to Mayor Michael Ludwig (SP), the coupon campaign was not only about financial support for the start-up, but also about securing the 60,000 jobs in Vienna’s gastronomy in the best possible way. In total, more than 80 percent of the 950,000 coupons of 25 and 50 euros issued for a total value of 30 million euros were exchanged. “I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Viennese, because it was only through their support that the aid measure could be implemented so successfully,” said Mayor Ludwig. According to Ludwig, most of the vouchers – that is, more than 5,000 food vouchers – were redeemed at these restaurants:

And after the coupon campaign, the following initiative follows: a digital system for guest registration that must be simple, secure and compliant with data protection regulations. The registration system will enter into test operation from the second half of October and, according to the city, it will be made available free of charge to 6,000 Viennese gastronomic companies and 1,800 coffee shops. Full operation should begin in the first half of November.

It is more difficult to give wrong information
The advantages of digital guest registration: depending on the city, all data is encrypted multiple times and automatically deleted after 28 days. The restaurant itself does not see them, only the health authority on request in case of contagion. Incorrect information should be made difficult, for example the system checks if an email address actually exists. However, the names are not verified. All appeal to personal responsibility, data protection must be ensured. When the guests arrive, they scan a QR code with their smartphone and then enter the required data on the mobile phone (name, email address, phone number). If the guest leaves, they can pay online.
As reported, it has happened more often in pubs that guests give incorrect data. The host has no way of verifying names and company for authenticity. And so, in addition to Donald Duck and Co, Sebastian Kurz is now a regular in many restaurants. According to Mayor Ludwig, there will still be lists of names on paper.
The system automatically records the location, table number and time. Local visitors can voluntarily save their details permanently on their own smartphone, so that when they visit a restaurant again, they just have to scan the QR code. The hosts and coffee growers themselves register once in a database.
