Bob Dylan released a new song a second time in a few days on Friday. “I Contain Multitudes”, like its predecessor “Murder Most Foul”, contains numerous cultural allusions, from Edgar Allan Poe to Anne Frank and the Rolling Stones to William Blake. The two tracks are Dylan’s first new compositions of his own in eight years.
In contrast to “Grossest Murder”, in which Dylan described the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy from various angles for 17 minutes, “I Contain Multitudes” is handled at around four and a half minutes. But the song is no less intense, wonderfully instrumentalized and sung. Lyrically, Dylan is once again worthy of the Nobel Prize. When the tracks were recorded it was still unknown.
