The Kremlin critic left the Charité in Berlin on Tuesday night. Vladimir Putin speculated on alleged self-poisoning, Navalny reacted sarcastically.
After about a month of treatment at the Berlin Charité, Alexei Nawalny was discharged from hospital treatment on Tuesday evening. This was announced by the university clinic. His health has improved so much that acute medical treatment could be terminated. The 44-year-old man, who was allegedly poisoned with the Novichok neurotoxin during a trip to Siberia in late August, was in the intensive care unit for more than three weeks.
Doctors consider a full recovery possible due to the previous course and current condition, according to the Charité. Any long-term consequences of severe poisoning can only be assessed later, he said.
Navalny is considered the sharpest critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Berlin he announced that he wanted to return to Russia. The Navalny case once again tested relations between Germany and Russia and put the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to the test.
“The phone feels like a stone”
The Charité did not provide any information on Nawalny’s current whereabouts. “The public communication on the state of health of Mr. Navalny is made in agreement with him and his wife,” he said only.
The 44-year-old had recently documented his recovery with multiple photos from Instagram. He thanked the “brilliant doctors” at the clinic in a message posted Saturday. However, not long ago he had not even recognized people and did not know how to speak. “That drove me to despair, because I basically understood what the doctor wanted, but I didn’t know where to get the words from.”
Navalny also noted that there are still many problems to be solved. The phone feels like a stone in my hand. “And pouring water yourself is a real attraction.”
After his release, he posted a photo of himself. On his Instagram page, the 44-year-old is sitting on a bench in a green area with a serious expression. Navalny wrote about the photo that she will now go to physical therapy every day and possibly visit a rehab center.

Putin assumed self-poisoning
According to “Le Monde”, Russian President Vladimir Putin has put into play a possible self-poisoning by Navalny. The French newspaper reports that in a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Putin suggested that Navalny may have self-administered the Novichok neurotoxin. Putin’s critic reacted to the report sarcastically.
During the telephone conversation with Macron on September 14, Putin put forward several theses on how the Navalny poisoning could have occurred without interference from the Russian authorities. In addition to self-poisoning, he referred to a possible connection to Latvia, where the neurotoxin maker Novichok lives. Macron firmly dismissed these assumptions after the “Le Monde” report.
Navalny himself scoffed at the assumptions of the online service Instagram: “I cooked Novichok in the kitchen,” he wrote wryly. “I downed some of my flask on the plane.” He sarcastically added: “Putin saw through me. You just can’t fool him.”
