In Myanmar, the de facto powerless head of government, Aung San Suu Kyi, appeared in public for the first time since the military coup a month ago. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was videotaped at her first court hearing and appears to be “in good health,” her lawyer Khin Maung Zaw told AFP. The 75-year-old faces dark charges, such as owning walkie-talkies.
Suu Kyi was arrested when the military came to power on February 1 in the capital, Naypyidaw, and has not been seen since. His attorney said he was unable to speak to his client before the hearing.
Your client is alleged to have violated Myanmar’s import and export regulations. This is apparently related to the walkie-talkies that were found in a search of his home after his arrest. Suu Kyi is also accused of violating the crown’s restrictions. The procedure is done behind closed doors.
Since the military came to power in the Southeast Asian country, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets to demand the return to democracy and the release of Suu Kyi and other detainees. On Sunday, security forces used massive violence in four cities. According to the UN, at least 18 people died.
