These are millions of animals that, according to Prime Minister Frederiksen, are now being killed. Because the discovered mutated virus jeopardizes the effectiveness of possible vaccines.

Concerned about the consequences of upcoming coronavirus vaccines, in Denmark killed all the minks. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced this Wednesday at an online press conference in Copenhagen. It involves millions of animals. Mink fur is popular for fur coats, among other things.

The virus had mutated under the minks and was transmitted to humans, the head of government said. The problem with this is that this mutation could ensure that a future vaccine does not develop the desired effect.

A mutated version of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus has already been found in twelve people in North Jutland, Frederiksen said. At the same time he warned that the mutation would not only affect other parts Denmark, but it could also spread to the rest of the world. The mink farmers are being compensated, as Food Minister Mogens Jensen said.

Denmark it is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. There are currently 1,139 breeding farms and around 15 to 17 million minks in the country. According to the Danish authorities, corona cases have already been found on more than 200 farms. The fur population has already been killed on 67 farms. After similar crown outbreaks in mink, the Netherlands decided in early June to kill all fur animals on affected farms.
