The initiators of a rally against the state crown measures in Munich prematurely canceled their march through the city on Saturday.
The police had previously stopped the train because there were more than 500 participants and, according to the police, almost no one was wearing a mask.
Police spoke of “many hundreds” of participants, but were initially unable to provide more specific figures. Later there was talk of a peak of 3000 people.
The main demonstration in Theresienwiese went as planned. Twice as many people as announced by the organizers attended. “We are currently taking over 10,000 participants,” said a Munich police spokeswoman. The main rally had to be interrupted just under an hour after the start because distance rules were not observed and the participants did not wear masks. The police were on duty with 1,400 soldiers.
The week before, there were riots at a similar rally in Berlin. Before the demonstration in Munich there was a legal tug of war.
It wasn’t until Saturday night that the Bavarian Administrative Court lifted a participation restriction imposed by the city on 1,000 protesters. The organizers had registered 5,000 for the final rally and 500 for the demonstration. His plan to hold the rally in the city center was rejected by the Administrative Court because there was too little space to maintain the necessary hygiene distances. Therefore, it should take place on Theresienwiese.
