Mourinho: “LASK can be a very tough opponent”

Mourinho said of the Europa League itself: “This is not the competition we wanted to play in,” said the coach after losing a place in the Champions League. “But we are playing teams from North Macedonia and Bulgaria in qualifying to be here now. And we will try to win the Europa League.”

Won twice

The sometimes eccentric and self-indulgent coach certainly highlighted his personal record in this competition. “I have played the Europa League twice and I have won it twice,” said Mourinho, referring to the triumphs with FC Porto and Manchester United. He won with the Portuguese in 2003 when the competition was still called the UEFA Cup. With United, he won the 2017 final against Ajax Amsterdam.

“The Europa League is a very long and difficult competition,” Mourinho continued. “You have a long group stage and then in the knockout stage Champions League teams are added, which in my opinion is very unfair.” In fact, from the sixteenth final, those clubs that have reached third place in their group in the premier category will enter the competition.

“But it is what it is. We’re going to need ten or eleven points to pass.” In addition to LASK, Ludogorets Rasgrad of Bulgaria and Royal Antwerp of Belgium are Tottenham’s group rivals.
