On Monday, 9,020 people in Austria were actively infected with SARS-CoV-2. In the last 24 hours, 750 new infections have been reported according to data from the Ministry of the Interior and Health. 488 people were in the hospital at 9.30am (more than 12pm on Sunday), 101 of them in intensive care units (103 on Sunday). The number of deaths from Covid-19 increased from five to 818 people.

On average, over the past seven days, 781 new infections were added each day. A total of 48,896 people have tested positive so far. 39,058 people are considered recovered.

The newest infections were in Vienna, 315. Upper Austria and Tyrol reported 106 new cases in the last 24 hours, Lower Austria 97 and Vorarlberg 50. 32 new infections were added in Styria, 23 in Salzburg, 12 in Carinthia and in Burgenland nine.

11,895 test results were reported in the last 24 hours. As always, there were far fewer on the weekend than on the week. According to figures from the Ministry of Health, only 66 tests were added in Styria. There were 174 in Burgenland, 191 in Carinthia, and 418 in Salzburg. Tirol recorded 858 tests, 1,022 Vorarlberg and 2,782 Lower Austria. 2,980 Covid tests were reported from Vienna in the last 24 hours, most of them with 3,404 SARS-CoV-2 tests in Upper Austria.

No maximum value yet for intensive care patients

Exactly a week ago, on September 28, there were 8,950 actively infected people in Austria, not much more than 9,020 today. There was a significant increase in intensive care patients in one week: they went from 88 last Monday to 101 today, which is an increase of almost 15 percent. This is still a far cry from the previous peak of 267 intensive care patients on April 8, but Austria was on lockdown at the time and hospitals, unlike today, were not fully operational. In routine operation, the utilization of intensive care capacities in hospitals is usually more than 80 percent, in many hospitals it is 90 percent or more.

Storch-Cluster

Ten coronavirus infections were reported on Monday in connection with an ice hockey training ground in St. Pölten. According to the office of the Health Minister Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ), 29 people from Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Carinthia participated in the event.

In Amstatten there is a group connected with the installation of a stork to celebrate a birth. There are already 15 infected people there. 13 of them come from Lower Austria, two from Upper Austria, according to the Königsberger-Ludwig office.

At a nursing home in Retz (Hollabrunn district), five residents and a staff member also fell ill with Covid-19, a spokesperson for the regional councilor said. Everyone in the facility has already been screened.

School in Carinthia closed

In Carinthia, a secondary school in Feistritz an der Drau in the Carinthian district of Villach-Land has been closed for ten days due to a case of corona on the teaching staff. The infected teacher had taught five classes, the state press service reported Monday. Students in the affected classes and all teachers at the school are now in quarantine and are being tested for Covid-19.
