2. Cigarettes are getting more and more expensive
In early October, cigarettes in Austria will also be 20 cents more expensive per pack. The reason is not just the tobacco tax increase postponed for six months due to the crisis in the crown. Both market leader Philip Morris and JTI Austria as No. 2, the former Austria Tabak, are also raising prices due to other additional costs in recent years, in which “glow sticks” did not become more expensive.
Spokesmen for the two companies referred to the conversion of cigarette packs imposed on the industry by the EU, the payment of fees to the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the costs of the European cigarette tracking system, a action taken by customs. The slightly increased minimum trade margin for tobacconists was also included. Manufacturers and tobacconists are assuming a stable or slightly growing cigarette market in Austria for this Corona 2020 year.
