The coronavirus vaccine from the American biotech company Moderna is about to receive emergency approval in the U.S. The vaccine took the decisive hurdle for this yesterday: The FDA’s Independent Vaccine Advisory Committee ruled in favor of the approval. The FDA is expected to approve the vaccine based on this recommendation shortly. It would be the second Covid-19 vaccine available in the US.
A week ago, the vaccine from Mainz biotech company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer received emergency approval. Mass vaccinations began in the United States on Monday.
Moderna applied for emergency approval from the FDA on November 30. The authority had already expressed concerns about the vaccine in documents released Tuesday and certified that it is highly effective. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) may want to complete its assessment for approval on January 6. According to the results of the relevant study for approval, the Moderna vaccine achieved a good 94 percent protection against Covid-19.
