Trump a few hours before the deadline to extend unemployment benefits on the golf course
Millions of Americans are at risk of losing unemployment benefits because outgoing US President Donald Trump does not want to approve the crown aid package decided by the US Congress after months of negotiations. Without the signature of the president, the right to aid will expire on Saturday for around 14 million citizens. Trump surprisingly refused to sign the bill on Tuesday.
The draft was ready for signing on Friday afternoon (local time) at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The president played golf at the West Palm Beach Club on Friday: A person familiar with his activities said Trump had been on the golf course with his close ally, Senator Lindsey Graham.
Crown aid of nearly $ 900 billion (€ 738.13 billion) is part of a 2.3 trillion legislative package. About 1.4 trillion of these go to regular public spending. Since these funds have also been blocked so far, the partial shutdown of authorities threatens since Tuesday. Trump had criticized parts of the draft as a waste.
The president’s staff were shocked by his rejection of the bill, a person familiar with the procedures said. The additional procedure is unclear. Trump could still approve the state aid and funds because he had not explicitly threatened a veto. (Reporters: Steve Holland and Tim Reid, written by Hans-Edzard Busemann; edited by Sabine Wollrab.
