Mikaela Shiffrin looks forward to her future at the Alpine Skiing World Cup, but is always overwhelmed by memories of her father, who died in February.
In an interview on CNN, the American spoke for the first time about the last moments she had with her father after her domestic accident.
“He no longer resembled himself. But I could still feel it. I think about it a lot, ”Shiffrin said with tears in her eyes. The 25-year-old had missed several races in the middle of the season due to the duel and had not successfully defended her World Cup title overall. It would have been his fourth consecutive.
Shiffrin led the last race in January
In addition, the final races, in which the Olympic champion and five-time world champion wanted to return, were canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus. Shiffrin played his last World Cup race at Bansko in late January. There he won the Super-G. The big crystal ball for the World Cup in general went to the Italian Federica Brignone.
After emotionally difficult weeks, Shiffrin is now longing for her return in the snow. “My motivation is increasing again,” said the winner of 66 World Cup races. “I am waiting for Sölden, for the first races.” The traditional start of the season is scheduled for October at the Ötztal. “I want to go there, my dad would like it too,” said Shiffrin. “I’m close to him on the mountain, so close that it hurts sometimes.”
