The 21-year-old German will compete with the American Haas team as a regular driver next year and will receive a “multi-year” contract.

Sebastian Vettel won’t be the only German in Formula 1 next year. The four-time world champion is kept company through Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. As expected, the 21-year-old Swiss-born will take over the second Haas cockpit alongside Russian Nikita Masepin, the US racing team announced Wednesday ahead of the Sakhir Grand Prix. Schumacher received a “multi-year” contract.

Some eight years after the end of the career of the living legend Michael, Formula 1 has a Schumacher again. “The prospect of being on the starting grid in Formula 1 next year makes me incredibly happy and leaves me speechless,” said Mick Schumacher.

On Friday next week he will drive his first kilometers with Haas during practice in Abu Dhabi. It is also used in the test for young drivers after the end of the season at the Yas Marina circuit.

Schumacher Jr. passed through the Ferrari forge

Schumacher has been a part of Ferrari’s youth academy since January 2019. The traditional Italian team, for which Michael Schumacher won five of his titles, has close ties with Haas. “He has a long-term relationship with Ferrari and we will follow his development at all times, both as a driver and as a person,” Scuderia team boss Mattia Binotto said in a Ferrari broadcast.

The promotion of Mick Schumacher to the highest formula class was carefully planned. This year he continues to drive in Formula 2 for the Italian team Prema and is the overall leader in the last two races of the season at the weekend in Bahrain. As in Formula 3, in which he won the European Championship title in 2018, he only developed his qualities in the second highest category in the second year.

In Formula 1 he will now compete for a team that has disappointed this year. With just three points, Haas is second to last in the constructors’ championship. The current two regulars Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen have to leave the racing team that entered Formula 1 in 2016. Last weekend, the terrifying Grosjean fire accident unintentionally made headlines. As if by miracle, the Frenchman survived the horrific accident almost unscathed.

Haas presented on Tuesday the second pilot for the next few years, at least that’s how it is planned. Masepin, who is also 21, is promoted by his wealthy father Dimitri and is also a Formula 1 rookie.

Michael Schumacher won 91 races and provided many unforgettable moments. Since a ski accident in the French Alps in December 2013, the now 51-year-old has been living completely isolated from the public. With his family in his adopted home in Switzerland on Lake Geneva, he continues to recover from the severe traumatic brain injury he suffered in his fall.
