Mick Schumacher’s first free practice session in Formula 1 has been canceled due to bad weather conditions. The Fia announced at noon that the first practice of the Eifel Grand Prix would not take place at the Nürburgring. Due to the fog on the runway, the rescue helicopter was unable to take off, but this is mandatory in Formula 1.
The 21-year-old Schumacher would make his debut with the Alfa Romeo racing team in an official session of the premier class. In reality, the son of former Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher drives in Formula 2. Alfa Romeo team boss Frédéric Vasseur left open in an interview with Sky TV whether Schumacher would have another chance at a later race of the season. Numerous fans had gathered at the Nürburgring, including Michael Schumacher hats and flags, as can be seen in television footage.
Giovinazzi drives in the second practice
For Friday’s second free practice session, Schumacher was not an option. Then the regular Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi should take over the cockpit again, which should test the track before Sunday’s race (2.10pm, SPIEGEL.de live ticker; TV: RTL, Sky). But nothing came out either: due to the weather, it won’t continue until Saturday.
In addition to Schumacher, 21-year-old Callum Ilott also had to give up his official debut in a Formula 1 race car, he was supposed to drive for Haas in training. Both drivers are part of Ferrari’s junior program; both Alfa Romeo and Haas drive Ferrari engines.
It is hoped that Schumacher will celebrate his debut in the near future. In recent days and weeks, rumors had spread that Schumacher would replace Giovinazzi at Alfa Romeo for the upcoming season. Vasseur declined to confirm that: “We will definitely see him soon in Formula 1. I think we are about to make a decision on our drivers for next year,” he said on Sky. “Mick is, of course, an option, but it is also up to Ferrari to make a decision.”
