Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) occupied Michaelerplatz in central Vienna for the second day in a row on Monday. The roughly 80 people pitched tents on the road and obstructed vehicle traffic, police spokesman Markus Dittrich explained when asked by the APA. Emergency vehicles and bicycles were allowed through. The police are currently checking the legal situation and how to proceed with the unrecorded meeting.
Officials had been present to observe the protest since 2 p.m. Sunday. A passage from Schauflergasse via Michaelerplatz to Herrengasse was still possible. The executive diverted the remaining traffic and did not dissolve the meeting for the time being. According to Dittrich, the activists were silent and said they wanted to stay a week.
Place declared a climate protection zone
The XR movement had already organized spontaneous traffic blockades in Vienna and other metropolises in the past to draw attention to climate change. They stated Michaelerplatz on Sunday in a statement about the climate protection zone. The “Circus” campaign is not just an expression of rebellion, but above all it relies on information and participation in the form of a support program with music and speeches, as well as an open stage for artists and dance performances.
