Michael Ludwig: “With every election you start from scratch”

Even with regard to a possible post-election coalition partner, Ludwig does not want to compromise: the straight coalition with the Greens is good, but after the election a new question of trust will emerge. The mayor only rules out a coalition with the FPÖ and the HC team.

Regarding the variant with the ÖVP, Ludwig says he finds it unfortunate that the federal government always needs Vienna as an enemy, although it is necessary to “unite” in the crisis. The Neos had also volunteered, says Wolf, and Ludwig reminds us that the Neos wanted to avoid a SPÖ mayor.

340 new corona cases in Vienna

The first part of the interview was about the Corona crisis. Ludwig considers it unlikely that the election date could shake because the traffic light in Vienna could jump to orange. People have prepared, voting cards have been requested, and the commissioners will ensure security at the polling stations.

The fact that Vienna is currently recording two-thirds of all new infections is, for Ludwig, “a sign that the virus has yet to be taken seriously.” The high numbers are due to the number of tests and the Vienna testing strategy, because people without symptoms are also tested.

In Carinthia and Burgenland there are more or the same amount of tests, continues Armin Wolf. “We also ran tests in large companies and found clusters that are not otherwise found,” says Ludwig. It would have discovered 4,000 cases without symptoms.

Wolf reports on cases that would have waited three to four days for a test, then again for the result, and even longer for the decision; for Ludwig, these are “isolated cases”. Just try more, but it will also increase the number of employees.

460 kilometers of bicycle lanes

Ludwig is also not very specific when Wolf asks him about part of his electoral program, according to which the goal of the SPÖ is to create 460 kilometers of new bike paths. To do this, between 130,000 and 180,000 parking spaces would have to be abolished, Wolf cites from a study. “I’m not familiar with this study,” Ludwig responds. When it comes to traffic, the SPÖ is not against cycle paths, even if some are skeptical. One is for “good cooperation” of all road users.

According to Ludwig, only those who have Austrian citizenship can vote in the Vienna elections. But he only said that after asking Wolf several times and after emphasizing several times that it was a federal matter. But he is in favor of Viennese without citizenship getting involved at the district level or in petitions.
