Mayr-Melnhof-Karton will invest heavily in the Frohnleiten location in the next two years: more than 100 million euros will be used for expansion, logistics and digitization, which will also guarantee jobs.
According to its own information, Mayr-Melnhof-Karton is the largest European producer of cardboard boxes and folding box packaging. The recycled cardboard is produced at the Frohnleiten site, and the research and development department is also located there.
One fifth of European consumption
“Mayr-Melnhof-Karton in Frohnleiten has around 570 employees who produce 550,000 tonnes of cardboard, that is, more than a fifth of the total consumption of recycled cardboard in Europe. Frohnleiten carton products are used for foods such as cereals, frozen foods, confectionery, fast food and also, for example, for e-commerce packaging ”, says CEO Peter Oswald.
Production will be increased
In 2021 and 2022, a total of more than 100 million euros will be invested in Frohnleiten: the site will be expanded and production will increase by ten percent. All 570 jobs are secured, but new ones will hardly be added, he said.
“We invested in the machine itself to make it run faster. We are investing in a new section of presses to produce higher quality, that is, to produce the same functionalities with less waste paper. But we are also investing in all the logistics that are not optimal at this location, ”says Oswald.
More than four million euros in federal funding
Economy Minister Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP) also participated in Friday’s presentation: she referred to the federal government investment bond, which now aims to motivate companies to take money in their hands despite the crisis. “At the moment we already have 53,000 requests for the investment bond, with an investment volume of 22,000 million euros. We have just put the third billion available for the investment premium, ”said the minister. More than four million euros in federal funds go to Mayr-Melnhof-Karton in Frohnleiten.
State Economic Counselor Barbara Eibinger-Miedl (ÖVP) describes the significant planned investment “as an extremely positive signal for Styria as a business location: such investments are the key for Styria to cope well with the Corona crisis”.
