Markus Rogan: between genius and madness

Although he can no longer swim as fast as before, Markus Rogan is still one thing: an exhilarating figure. This week, the now 38-year-old former athlete made international headlines because he took a scheduled flight from Israel to the US despite a positive Corona test.

This shows once again that only a few Austrians dominate the change of position between “Everybody’s Darling” and “Unsympathetic of the Nation” as the 2004 athlete of the year.

In Rogan’s case, this used to be accompanied by a part of self-reflection: “It was an obsession with one’s own fame that knows no limits,” he said eight years ago. In any case, his life was never boring, as various stations show.

  • A life from a picture book: Already at the age of 14, the Viennese moved to the United States, where he later studied at the renowned Stanford University and joined world-class athletes. Since the end of her swimming career, she has worked as a psychotherapist in posh Beverly Hills. During the 2016 Olympics he dealt with athletes from Brazil. He runs a facility in Malibu that helps teens with drug problems and depression. In 2014 he married Leanne, with whom he has two children (2 and 3 years old).
  • Olympic silverfish: With two Olympic silver medals from the 2004 Games, Rogan is Austria’s most successful swimmer in the last hundred years. There are also two world shortstop world records and a total of nine world championship titles, including a 200-meter title in the 25-meter pool in Manchester.
  • Low blow in Rome: In 2009, after the World Cup in Rome, Rogan was beaten by gorillas while trying to enter a nightclub. The eccentric, perceived as arrogant in some places, then retired to the United States, marked by punches and kicks, to concentrate again on swimming.
  • “Blasphemy”: In 2012, Rogan faced a wave of outrage when she suspected on the radio that Hermann Maier’s long history of victories might have to do with a reduced ability to think. Even then-Sports Minister Norbert Darabos stepped in and asked him to focus on the London Olympics. Rogan returned to row a little later.
  • Escape from Israel: Most Recent Episode: On Monday, Rogan is said to have flown illegally from Israel to the United States despite a positive Corona test. The 38-year-old had submitted a previous negative test at the airport. “Their behavior is unacceptable,” Willi Ruttensteiner judged. This had brought Rogan the previous year as supervisor of the Israel soccer team.
