Beer festivals exist or existed in several countries, for example, the “United Beer Festival” in Norway, the “Ukrainian Beer Festival” or in the former GDR the “German Union of Beer Drinkers. Beer”. Marco Pogo, singer of “Turbobier”, has closed this gap in the political landscape in Austria and can count on a large fan base in Hollabrunn.
The beer festival in Vienna has already competed in the previous national elections and in the current election campaign for the Vienna city council elections it is even claiming the mayor’s chair for the creative musician who spent his high school in Hollabrunn and whose family still lives in Hollabrunn to this day.
The beer festival is purely satirical, which can be seen in the 33-year-old’s campaign promise that he would turn the high-jet Viennese fountain into a beer fountain. NÖN spoke with Marco Pogo about the appeal of becoming mayor, the realistic goals, and the future.
NOT: What is so attractive about wanting to be mayor of Vienna?
Marco Pogo: Vienna is a wonderful city that I like to live in. Of course, there are also many things that do not work optimally. Vienna, for example, does not yet have a beer fountain. I want to change that. It also seems to be a very nice squat.
How realistic is this goal given the result of the last 0.6 percent National Council election?
Pogo: The ‘beer festival’ movement has grown tremendously in recent months. While 600 people submitted a declaration of support in the 2019 National Council elections, in the summer of 2020 there were already 4,500 people. This trend can also be seen very clearly on the Internet: the beer festival is clearly in first place and with a budget of 0 euros, while the other parties invest hundreds of thousands of euros in taxes. The goal is clear: 5.2%, like my turbo beer, and then shake and stir.
Will the beer festival also participate in the upcoming Hollabrunn municipal elections?
Pogo: The beer festival will become the new big player on the Austrian political landscape, of that I am sure!
