Shock Monday afternoon: Prominent Viennese criminal defense lawyer Wolfgang Blaschitz was found dead in his car on Dietrichgasse by a passerby not far from the district and regional court.
Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful. At first everything pointed to a natural death.
Wiener Neustadt prosecution spokesman Erich Habitzl later confirmed in an interview with the APA on Monday night: “There is no evidence of third party fault.” Therefore, an autopsy was not ordered: “The body has been released.”
Blaschitz was known for numerous prominent criminal trials. Among other things, the Viennese IS terrorist Lorenz K. recently represented. Blaschitz was “specialized” in Chechen perpetrators, whom he often faced even before desperate negotiations. He was 62 years old.
“It leaves a huge void in the judiciary,” Blaschitz’s colleague Astrid Wagner told the APA. Wagner suspected that the cause of death was a heart attack: “I was working too hard and I was definitely overworked.” Regardless of this, he took her disappearance by surprise: “That was not to be expected by any means.” He last met Blaschitz, with whom he appeared regularly in court, last Friday at dinner.
