Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: Court annuls corruption sentences against former president

Judge Edson Fachin argued that the court in Curitiba, in southern Brazil, which had started all the trials against Lula, had no jurisdiction. The cases must now be reopened by a federal court in Brasilia. According to the Reuters news agency, the Brazilian attorney general announced that he would immediately appeal the decision.

If the judgments of the federal court in Brasilia are not reinstated, the still popular left-wing politician could stand in the presidential elections next year.

Lula, who was president of Brazil from 2003 to 2011, had always rejected accusations of corruption against him for political reasons. In one case, a multi-year prison sentence had already begun in April 2018.

Lula has been on the run since November 2019. According to Reuters, his criminal record makes it impossible for Lula to run for president again at this time.

His lawyers had requested his release following the Supreme Court’s decision that those convicted cannot be detained until all legal remedies have been exhausted.
