The lockdown in Austria will last until January 6. However, there will be some relaxation again starting Monday, December 7. Here’s an overview of the new coronavirus regulations.

Commerce and services are allowed to open from Monday, as well as compulsory schools and kindergartens. The upper grades and universities remain in distance education, with the exception of high school graduates. Exit restrictions apply again starting Monday, December 7, from 8 pm to 6 am There are exceptions for the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays, when ten people are allowed to gather, the government announced Wednesday.

Museums and libraries can open from Monday.

As of Monday, Austrian museums and libraries can also reopen. Cultural events are still prohibited and cinemas are closed. Indoor sports are also not allowed, you cannot enter the fitness studios. As of December 24, individual outdoor sports such as skiing or ice skating are allowed.

The relaxation will apply from December 7. From then on, two homes can be found, except for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. For children over the age of ten, a mask is required in class starting Monday. Commerce, as well as services, including those close to the body such as hairdressers or masseurs, can reopen from Monday. The limitation of one client per ten square meters applies.

Gastronomy and hotels will be closed until January 6

Restaurants and hotels must be closed until January 6. Christmas markets are not allowed and the new regulations spell the end of punch stands. Open alcoholic beverages cannot be sold by pickup.

The strict lockdown, which has been in place for about two weeks, has taken effect, Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said. This can be seen in the 7 day incidence. This was around 600 weeks ago, and will most likely hit 250 by the end of this week. That would be 3,500 new infections per day. The overload of intensive care capacities had been avoided. Therefore, there could now be cautious initial steps. “The pandemic is not over,” said the chancellor. He also expects the number of infections to increase again around Christmas and New Years Eve.

Crown: Income replacement extended until the end of the year

The extension of the closures of restaurants and hotels will be accompanied by financial aid from the state, announced the vice chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) an extension of the compensation for sales until the end of the year. More details on this and the costs to the Finance Ministry will be announced at a second press conference on Wednesday afternoon. There should also be continued support for the culture, which is largely closed.

The relaxation of the number of infections “does not happen fast enough.” So, “there is no prospect for events until January 7, we will take care of that and announce in two weeks how things can continue,” Kogler said.

The hard blockade has had an effect, but the number of infections remains high, so it can only “open steps very carefully,” said Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP). He urged the population to adhere to the measures and limit social contacts to the bare minimum. “The pandemic is not over, the virus is with us. The contagion rates are extremely high.”

Normality expected for summer

“In perspective, we will be back to normal in the summer, but there are still six months to go,” Kurz warned. “The initial steps are only possible with restrictions and tests.” Next Christmas will be different than what one is used to, “but it must be dignified,” Kurz said. They don’t want to see exponential growth again after Christmas.

Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) referred to the high number of deaths that the second wave was much more powerful and dynamic than the first.
