Polish Dawid Kubacki won the second competition of the tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Austrians disappointed. Read about the New Years jump here on the live indicator!

The Olympic hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the scene of the traditional New Year’s event, continues to be a spoiler for the ambitious ÖSV eagles at the Four Hills Tournament. As in previous years, Stefan Kraft and Co. gave away any chance of general victory in posh Bakken in the Partenkirchen district.

Dawid Kubacki from Poland celebrated on Friday. The defending tournament champion won with a hill record in the second round (144 meters) ahead of Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud and his compatriot Piotr Żyła. For Kubacki it was the fifth victory of the World Cup, and a very important one, as he made an impressive return in the race for victory at the circuit.

German Karl Geiger, winner of the start at Oberstdorf, landed in fifth place and had to give up the lead of the overall standings to Granerud. Geiger is now 4.0 points behind the Norwegian. Behind them are two Polish jumpers, Kamil Stoch and the winner of the day, Kubacki. The tour begins its third round on Saturday and Sunday at Innsbruck Bergisel.

The dream of the “golden eagle” has exploded again for the Austrians, who fought tremendously at Garmisch and fell collectively – with the exception of Philipp Aschenwald, who finished sixth with jumps at 130.0 and 136.5 meters and thus a difficult ÖSV- He knew how to prevent defeat. In the general classification, however, he is already 24.3 points behind the leader Granerud, which translates to 13.5 meters. As the second best red, white and red eagle, Daniel Huber was 14th in Garmisch. After a completely screwed-up competition, Stefan Kraft couldn’t get past 28th place. For Markus Schiffner and Michael Hayböck, the New Years competition ended after just one round.

For Kraft, its plight of the recent past continued. The overall winner of the Salzburg World Cup, who was third on the Olympic hill in 2017 but was only able to jump in 31st, 49th and 13th places, reacted disappointed: “I still can’t say exactly why I failed. You have to cross out that quickly. Now Innsbruck is waiting, I can wait for it. “

But even there, an ÖSV victory is not necessarily to be expected, but rather a four-way battle for the tour crown. Because halftime leader Granerud and fourth-placed Kubacki are only separated by 8.6 points before the Bergisel jump. Thanks to the national contingent, the Austrian team will be reinforced by Gregor Schlierenzauer, Manuel Fettner, Timon Kahofer, Clemens Leitner, Stefan Rainer and Maximilian Steiner.
