Little Marie de Pressbaum not only conquered the heart of Pope Francis in seconds, but also that of his millions of followers.

Lower Austrian Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and Bishop Alois Schwarz were greeted Monday morning with a group of eight children from an autism center in St. Pölten for a private audience with Pope Francis. At the meeting with the Holy Father, the caregivers and relatives of the children were also present, as well as the Regional Councilor Martin Eichtinger.

“I am happy to see their faces and I can read in their eyes that they are also happy to be with me a little bit,” the Pope said. “God created the world with a great variety of flowers of all colors. Each flower is beautiful and unique. Each one of us is beautiful in God’s eyes and he loves us. This creates the need to say to God: Thank you Thank you for the gift of life and thank you for all living beings. Thank you for mother and father, thank you to all our families, “said the Pope.

One of the children had a special affection for the Holy Father. Little Marie from Lower Austria stole the show in her red dress. She did not care about a fixed seating assignment, but pointed directly at the papal chair. She was even allowed to touch the chair without hesitation and with her loving manners. Pope Francis even shared the sweet pictures of the audience on Instagram. And so Marie could not only be, but also conquer that of her millions of followers.

In German, the Holy Father asked those present to pray for him: “This job is not easy.” The Pope thanked Mikl-Leitner, the children’s parents and all those who accompanied them to the meeting. Children visit St. Pölten’s “Sunshine” clinic. It is a pediatric social center founded in 1995 that combines diagnosis, counseling and therapy for children and adolescents with special needs. The children presented the Pope with a painting that they had painted with a great sun.

As Mikl-Leitner reported to the APA, the group spent months preparing for the trip. The idea came before the coronavirus epidemic. It is the first group of children and young people that the Pope has received since the beginning of the pandemic. Mikl-Leitner presented the Holy Father with a vine. The Grüner Veltliner was later used in the Vatican Gardens.

Before the audience with Francis, Mikl-Leitner met with Cardinal Peter Turkson, prefect of the Dicastery for the Holistic Development of Man, to discuss ecological issues. The cardinal is in charge of the implementation of the encyclical “Laudato Si” issued five years ago, in which Pope Francis spoke out in favor of sustainable environmental and climate protection.

The ÖVP politician presented the “Nature in the Garden” initiative to Turkson. This was founded 20 years ago in Lower Austria as a citizen movement for organic gardening. According to State Councilor Eichtinger, more than 70 percent of all municipalities in the state have joined the initiative.

During her visit to Rome on Sunday, the Governor of Lower Austria awarded the garden of the Austrian Embassy to the Holy See the ecological certificate “Nature in the garden”. This emphasizes the sustainable management of the garden in the sense of the papal encyclical “Laudato Si”. In addition, an exhibition bed with plants from Lower Austria was installed in the Austrian embassy.
