A Vienna court found the man guilty of committing several sabotage attempts on trains between Munich and Nuremberg in 2018. The jury is convinced that he acted on behalf of the terrorist group IS.
northAfter a series of Islamist attacks on ICE trains on the Munich-Nuremberg route, a 44-year-old Iraqi man was sentenced to life in prison in Vienna on Thursday night. The jury was convinced the man was acting on behalf of the terrorist militia of the Islamic State (IS), the Austrian news agency APA reported. His wife was acquitted before the Vienna Regional Court. She denied any knowledge.
The man was convicted of multiple assassination attempts as a terrorist offense, serious property damage as a terrorist offense, and membership in a terrorist organization. Decisions are not final.
The accused confessed his actions
The Iraqi wanted to carry out several attacks on trains on the ICE route between Munich and Nuremberg in 2018 with wedges and a steel cable. Also in Berlin he tried to derail a train. He failed with his plan. It only remained due to faulty technical designs by man in case of material damage to the locomotives. No one was injured.
The Iraqi living in Vienna as a recognized refugee has confessed the facts. But he denied any killing intent and terrorist background. “He wanted to get attention,” said his defense attorney. Their objective was to withdraw foreign troops from Iraq.
