Lidl pledged in a broadcast on Wednesday to the goals of the EU circular economy package. “With one-way tanks, cycles can be closed, the quality of high-quality raw material can be preserved, and waste can be minimized,” says Lidl Austria boss Alessandro Wolf. “In order to achieve the common goals of the circular economy package in Austria, the entire collection and recycling system needs to be optimized, standardized and further simplified.”
Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) welcomed Lidl’s commitment to the plastic tank. “In recent months we have made good progress in discussions with retailers, step by step, and I am sure that support will be even greater here,” Gewessler said in a statement to the APA. Gewessler had announced a one-way tank model in the fall through the end of the year. In the long term, the reusable quota for beverage containers should increase to 55 percent by 2030. Environmental protection organizations Global 2000 and Greenpeace were also pleased with Lidl’s announcement.
