LASK made their promises and threw it all away again in the final game of the Europa League group stage at Ludogorets Razgrad, which didn’t really make sense.
As a team that had already been eliminated, the Linz team clearly beat the Bulgarian champions 3-1 (match report >>>) and achieved an honor victory for the five-year rankings and for their own club coefficient.
Dominik Thalhammer prides itself on the convincing performance of his athletes in Bulgaria. “I was very, very impressed with my team, how they found focus and attitude today. We were incredibly dominant in the first half, very, very good at pushing, we did good deeds,” said the coach of the Bundesliga leaders after the match.
LASK by far the best third
Although LASK was extremely dominant against completely toothless Bulgarians, the Linz team conceded a blow out of nowhere immediately after the break and fell behind over the course of the game. Elvis Manu de todos, who already scored three times in the 4-3 LASK over Ludogorets at the Gugl, scored the goal for the Bulgarians after being substituted a few seconds earlier.
The Upper Austria did not let this take its place and turned the game around with a dream goal from Philipp Wiesinger, a converted penalty from Rene Renner and a header from Mads Madsen. “We stayed calm even after falling behind and finished the game with a good performance,” Thalhammer said happily.
Despite another good group stage, LASK is not allowed to hibernate in the Europa League this time, with ten points at the final table, the athletes have to give up in third place. No other third party could score as many points in this year’s Europa League season. The second best third place after LASK is called AZ Alkmaar and has “only” eight points.
A circumstance that hurts Thalhammer: “The only disappointment is simply that you are not there with ten points (in the knockout phase, note)”.
