Tomorrow Friday will be published how Vienna and the remaining areas are evaluated. However, early in the morning, Anschober confirmed that he was not currently expecting “orange.”
From Wednesday to Thursday, 664 people tested positive for Covid-19, most of the new infections were again in Vienna with 387 cases. That fueled rumors that the federal capital could be turned “orange” tonight. The growing number, especially in Vienna, is also watched with concern at the Chancellery. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (vice president) expects “stricter measures” from the traffic light commission, as it is called from within the APA. Kurz therefore refuses to “calculate the numbers.”
During a background discussion with journalists Thursday morning, the health minister was cautious. When asked if he expected other districts and cities to change to “yellow” and Vienna even to “orange”, he stressed that he did not want to anticipate the commission. The meeting will probably last until late at night. But, according to Anschober, shortly before the latest figures were released: “I currently have no indication that things are going in the direction of orange.”
What the commission decides at night is like an “expert report” for the political decisions that will later be made, Anschober said. He discussed the recommendations of the commission within the government, that this “was not a decision alone” of the Minister of Health, Anschober stressed. Every Friday at 11 am, including tomorrow, there will be a press conference.
The hacker also wants stricter measures
In view of the sharp rise in coronavirus cases, Vienna calls for stricter measures to be reintroduced. Health Councilor Peter Hacker (SP) announced Thursday in an interview with the APA that he would discuss this with the federal government. Either new regulations are needed at the national level or the possibility of imposing regional measures, he explained.
The city council will report tomorrow, Friday, after the talks, of the hardening it considers useful, as announced. However, he indicated that there could be additional obligations to wear mouth and nasal protection and new regulations for the maximum number of people indoors or at outdoor events.
In Vienna, the numbers rose again by 387 cases in 24 hours, to a total of 9,946 confirmed infections. The death toll related to the virus is 224. A 77-year-old man has died. 7,137 people have recovered.
Some “rules of the game” needed again
The number of cases in urban areas, not only in Vienna, would undoubtedly increase, warned Health Councilor Peter Hacker (SP) in an interview with the APA. Therefore, it is necessary to tighten the measures again: “We need again some rules of the game.” However, Vienna is in the “legal dilemma” of not being able to take the precautions on its own.
According to the city council, it would be possible to insert a passage in the respective ordinances that may dictate different regional regulations. Hacker wishes in any case to create additional measures outside the family association, as he emphasized. Therefore, the new stricter measures should be taken for commerce or for general access indoor spaces, but also for outdoor gatherings.
The department head assured him that he was now satisfied with the development of the Corona traffic light. Because additional parameters were inserted after working conversations with the federal government. The different testing strategies are now also taken into account. Vienna, for example, systematically tests contact persons, who also discover cases without symptoms, as was emphasized at the city hall.
Hacker assured that he did not want to get away from him, even if the number of cases would decrease rapidly. Because this would mean that many infections would go unnoticed. Hacker said he still did not know if the traffic light would be yellow or orange tomorrow Friday: “I also agree with the orange. That should not be a larifari instrument.”
Meanwhile, a few days after the school started, some cases were known in Vienna schools. According to a “Today” report in Hernals, two classes were sent home for suspected cases. In another case, a tested student is said to have arrived at the school before the test result was available. As was positive, according to the report, colleagues or teachers had to go into quarantine.
