“The single point of sale in Austria has disappeared, this hallmark of one place, although it is actually the same everywhere. It was a massive restriction, especially for the around 320 companies in our community,” Freylinger said. Because the companies lacked the many commuters traveling to work, on the other hand there were also many commuters traveling abroad, so there was also a lack of workers outside of Kuchl. Almost 1,500 employees come to work from out of town, around 2,500 community residents 7,400 have their jobs out of town.
Restaurants in Kuchl remain closed
“I am very sorry about the restaurant sector, because after 16 days of inactivity with a day off (today, Monday, note), it goes directly to the next blockade.” There are twelve restaurants in Kuchl, according to the mayor, most of them would not open today. “But many will switch to delivery service.”
The state of Salzburg pulled out the “Corona emergency brake”
The state of Salzburg hit the “emergency brake” in mid-October (we reported) after Tennengau became the district with the highest number of infections in all of Austria. Kuchl stood out with 87 infected people at the time, which is why entry and exit was banned from October 17. The only exceptions were for the supply of food or heating material, for emergency vehicles and for travelers working in systemically relevant professions.
Gastronomy and hotels had to close. Commercial and service transactions remained open to the citizens of the community. In addition, there were exit restrictions such as closing in the spring, with the known exceptions, exercise outside, help in the neighborhood and shopping.
Unwillingness to cooperate as a challenge
The worsening situation in Kuchl and Tennengau may also be partly due to a certain ignorance of the citizens about the above measures. “We couldn’t find any more groups in Kuchl,” State Medical Director Petra Juhasz said at the time. “There was no longer cooperation in specifying possible contact persons for infected people. Many have symptoms, but they cannot be evaluated so they do not have to be quarantined.” At the time, social media even asked that people not cooperate and not adhere to the measures.
The number of infected people rose to 131 a few days after the quarantine took effect, but then dropped to 80 in late October. For this reason, the country decided to let the isolation expire, which was limited to November 1, midnight.
