Kristoffersen after winning Madonna’s slalom: “It’s just the head” – winter sports – alpine skiing

In the last races there were always similar images: a defenseless Henrik Kristoffersen at the end. The Norwegian was far behind his claims, the uncertainty was palpable.

On the Madonna di Campiglio slalom, however, she managed to break free: with a race to catch up, she went from 12th place after the 1st round to victory. In such cases, you often listen to drivers that have changed something in the settings. Not so this time. “It’s just the head,” Kristoffersen explains in an interview with ORF.

And he also bows to his longtime rival: “At this point, Marcel was amazing that he always ran every race with full attack and risk. I have to say, it’s not that easy.”

“The first race was just bad”

Even after the first round at Madonna, it didn’t look like it was going to get any better. “The first race was just bad. It is not technically bad, but it is smooth and calm,” analyzes the winner of the slalom world cup of the 2019/20 season.

His team told him to trust his strengths: “You said, I just have to remember that I have already won many races. In the second race it was at full speed and at the limit. I have to say that it was one of my most emotional victories.” .

Problems with skiing technique.

The fact that he has problems with his skiing technique is nothing new to him. “That was the case often in the past. But then it was mostly in the fall and there are no races.” Therefore, it was possible to correct the errors in training.

Now the deficits have manifested themselves in the races. “There were three really bad giant slalom races in a row,” Kristoffersen said with self-criticism. “The start of the season in Sölden and the parallel race in Lech have gone well. But from Santa Caterina until now it has been very difficult.”

Feel better in slalom than in giant slalom

In slalom he felt better anyway: “I thought I would be there. In Alta Badia it was not bad to ski. But the first race today was only slow. And then a second race.”

He wants to take advantage of that and fully attack after the Christmas holidays: “If I drive like this in January, it is certainly possible to do a lot of things.”

Christmas without girlfriend

Speaking of Christmas: for Kristoffersen, as for many, it will be an unusual celebration. “I’m celebrating in Salzburg, for the first time I’m not going to Norway,” he explains.

And only in the closest circle with his father and a coach. The rest of the family and especially his girlfriend are not there. “My girlfriend flew to Norway in early December. She can’t come now. Maybe I won’t see her again until February …”
