Vincent Kriechmayr set a clear best time in final training for the ski World Cup descent in Val d’Isere. The 29-year-old was 0.66 seconds faster than Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde on Friday. His compatriot from Upper Austria, Daniel Hemetsberger, again finished fifth with the 50th start and 1.11 seconds behind. Two-time Olympic champion Matthias Mayer, who survived a moment of shock unscathed, did not finish.
“You can’t overestimate a bad training session and you can’t overestimate a good training session,” Kriechmayr said afterward. “Not bad, but there are still some things I can do a little better.” The first descent of this winter competition will take place on Sunday, and the Super-G will go up on Saturday (10.30 am). In any case, Kriechmayr seems to be well equipped to begin with.
Hemetsberger was happy with another surprising fifth place. “He was a bit sore after the race yesterday, and he wasn’t exactly better today before the race. That’s why I deliberately took a very high position below, ”he revealed. Anyway, he left stronger names: Kjetil Jansrud was ninth, 1.27 seconds behind, while Beat Feuz and Dominik Paris landed in 41st place (+2.91).
At the World Cup, Hemetsberger’s only result so far is 15th in 2020 at Kvitfjell. The 29-year-old did not want to speculate on a superior result Sunday just because of training performance. “It’s still just training, you can’t buy anything.” Many veterans have yet to reveal their letters. He plans to finish in the top 20. “That is also a realistic goal.”
Daniel Danklmaier finished 17th, Christopher Neumayer consolidated his starting place for Sunday with 19th place. Max Franz and Hannes Reichelt were ex aequo 23, the other Austrians were classified outside the top 30. “Every race is a learning process and it helps me to come back,” said Reichelt, who, according to his own statement, still lacks what obvious. “It’s just a matter of continuing to work step by step and letting go of a bit of the racing pig in the race.”
Mayer was lucky when he fell on the bottom section of the track at more than 100 km / h and escaped safely. “I took the corner too straight. There were such light hits on the goal that I went a little too far, the net was there too fast. I couldn’t stop anymore, ”reported Carinthian, who had been doing well up to that point.
According to the weather forecast, the Super-G should drop a few inches of fresh snow on Saturday. “We’ll see it tomorrow anyway. If it’s too much, there will surely be postponements, but I hope not.” I think they will get through it well, ”Mayer emphasized.
