Kostelka: More support for family members who care for them should be the focus of next week’s care steering group

And also: a special support program to financially secure beginners during their training and to finally increase the amount of support for 24 hours.

Vienna (OTS) More than 80 per cent of all nursing and care services in Austria are provided by family members at home. In absolute numbers, this means that more than 900,000 people in Austria provide an invaluable service, but these caring relatives rarely get the attention they deserve in the caregiving debate.

“Supportive family members are a pillar of support in the care system,” said the president of the Pensioners Association, Dr. Peter declared on the day of loving relatives: “Therefore, they need the best possible support, more recognition and, last but not least, financial relief for your job. In the concept of care for the retired association, we have included a series of measures that aim to improve the situation of the family members who care for them. This should be the focus of next week’s care steering group. “

Promote opportunities for career changers

It is important to expand the staffing of mobile facilities, such as home help, healthcare, visitor services and home nursing. Kostelka: “Especially now in the difficult situation in the job market caused by the Crown, there is great potential for possible career changes. Take advantage of this opportunity. Enough training opportunities are now required to provide new hires with the best possible qualifications for care and support. But she also needs a special support program so that these future nurses can have financial security during their training. “

Equal rights for retirees who care

The pensioners’ association is the logical representation of those who must be cared for in the care of the elderly. At the same time, however, he is also the representative of the affective relatives. Because, according to Kostelka, “Many – about 50 percent – of the caregivers are already retired and are caring for their very elderly parents. In this context, it is particularly incomprehensible that precisely this group of family members is economically disadvantaged, as determined by the Federal Administrative Court. “The merits: Those caring for and caring for Level 3 family members at home have the option of purchasing pension insurance free of charge. Pension contributions are paid by the public sector for the period of care. Everyone benefits from this, except for retirees. “That is unfair”, says the president of PVÖ Kostelka and therefore demands “that pensioners can also benefit from free self-insurance and thus receive a higher special insurance quote for periods of care. Those who do not have their own pension must purchase periods of insurance as contribution periods and thus receive their own pension entitlement. “

Education and training opportunities, information points.

Those who care at home are constantly faced with new challenges that often outweigh their own problem-solving skills. Kostelka: “Who can help those who help if they don’t know what to do? In addition to the already large load, there is also the uncertainty that it might not be able to meet the increasing demands. This needs urgent relief: Through local training and low-threshold higher education offers for family members who care for them, through complementary support from care professionals, and also through digital offers such as webinars or hotlines, with which patients dependents can get in touch 24 hours a day. “

This and all other points of the comprehensive care concept of the Austrian Pensioners Association will be the president of PVÖ, Dr. Peter Kostelka presents the meeting of the “Care Steering Group” next Tuesday. Kostelka: “As an association of pensioners, we have already achieved a lot: the abolition of the assistance resource or the annual valuation of the assistance allowance. Those were milestones. But great challenges still await us, there is still much to do. For family members who care for them, but also in other areas: For example, an increase in the amount of funding for 24-hour care is long overdue. It was last increased in 2008. “
