Kogler expects “majorities” with the ÖVP

“Mechanism” in government “not so easy” – Green successes in coalition “are impressive”

Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) expects “majorities” with the ÖVP on the issue of accepting refugees from Greek camps. It is “possible that we can still reach them,” but ÖVP Interior Minister Karl Nehammer is solely responsible, he said on “ZiB2” on Thursday. The plan to host 100 families had been presented to him and now the pressure will continue. The partial fitness imposed by the ÖVP “is not the biggest problem” for Kogler.

Kogler refuted the idea that the Greens could block ÖVP projects in the Council of Ministers to enforce their demand that refugees be admitted: it was important to “always find compromises”, “the mechanism is not that simple,” it was it needs a majority in parliament. “We will see what we can do,” he responded to criticism, saying that the Greens could not achieve anything in the coalition with the ÖVP.

The fact that ÖVP Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner is now enforcing the partial suitability of the armed forces through a decree that bypasses the government partner – which was recently strongly criticized by the Greens – “will not be the biggest problem”, according to Kogler. Because in principle it was agreed “according to the direction”, he does not know exactly the decree.

Kogler did not accept negative findings on the work of the green government as a whole: the successes of his party were “impressive”, they had “achieved a lot” in environmental and climate protection, in social packages for the Crown crisis, with the increase of the judicial budget and the Foreign Fund for Disasters. What strikes you most positively about ÖVP is that it enables the “big offensive” in climate protection. The vice-rector avoided the question of what surprised him negatively: “Let’s leave it out, time is up,” he referred to the exceeded interview time.
