Romano worked for the child protection organization “Orphan’s Dream” in Kenya when she was kidnapped. On November 20, 2018, five people, including three children, were injured at the orphanage in question when several armed men attacked. Chakama is about 60 kilometers from the coastal town of Malindi, which is popular with tourists and Italian immigrants.

“I was strong and didn’t give up,” said Romano. The young woman was released thanks to an action by the Italian community services with the Turkish and Somali forces 30 kilometers from the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
