The Salzburg Woerle cheese dairy in Henndorf (Flachgau) has a new tour. Gerhard Woerle, great-grandson of company founder Johann Baptist Woerle, resigns from the management at the end of the year and hands it over to his son Gerrit Woerle, the fifth generation. The new boss would like to steer the company even further towards sustainability, from reducing truck trips to the planned creation of a biodiversity region.

Gerhard Woerle, 76, worked at the family business for about 60 years, expanding it from a village cheese factory to one of Austria’s largest private cheese factories. The new managing director, together with the supplier dairy producers, wants to convert the green areas in Flachgau and Mondseeland into a unique biodiversity and agricultural use region by 2030.

The expansion of the Henndorf location should also make the company greener. Gerrit Woerle announced that 5,000 truck trips should be saved and a photovoltaic system installed. The 35-year-old has worked in various areas of the company for years and studied business administration and “strategic management.”

The private cheese factory, founded in 1889, employs about 350 people. In 2019, the company generated sales of almost 132 million euros. The profit on the balance sheet was just under € 30 million. Woerle produces GMO-free silo hard cheese and hay milk and also supplies the international market with processed cheese products under the “Happy Cow” brand. It exports to around 70 countries. The export quota was 51 percent in 2018, this year around 28,500 tons of cheese were produced.
