On Stefanitag, Carinthian LH Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) expressed his anger at the crown sanctions on cohabitation: it is a statutory provision made by the federal government, according to which cohabiting couples in which a person is infected with corona virus, a fine can also be imposed if the healthy person stays in the same household. Kaiser asked the federal government to suspend such penalties for now.

The Health Ministry described Kaiser’s criticism on Saturday night in a reaction to the APA as “incomprehensible.” A spokesman for the department announced that the federal government’s requirements for tracking contact persons were “clear.” “However, these are only recommendations. The competence here clearly rests with the federal states and district administrative authorities.

According to media reports, there should have been fines of around 300 euros in Carinthia. There was also reportedly criticism from the opposition parties FPÖ and Team Kärnten / Köfer. The head of the FPÖ, Gernot Darmann, had asked, among other things: “How can you force people to leave their loved ones on the street?” The “absurd penalties” must be declared null and void immediately.

Kaiser had said that the state of Carinthia had no control whatsoever. “The responsibility for this rests solely with the federal government, which is now required,” the governor said, according to a transmission from the regional press service on Saturday.

It assumes that the sanctions imposed so far will not have legal validity, said the governor. “And I hope the federal government will quickly remove the unrealistic regulation that has now been made public,” Kaiser said. Such sanction notices, which are issued by district authorities in the course of indirect federal administration as an authority directly subordinate to the federal government, should be suspended. It will also urge the federal government to make the necessary changes in writing and over the course of the next video conference on January 4.
