For Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens), the 6,995 new infections in the last 24 hours mean “stagnation at a dramatically high level.”
In the last 24 hours, 6,995 new corona infections were reported in Austria. The positive rate of the 31,316 CRP tests entered into the Epidemiological Notification System (EMS) was 22.33 percent. For Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens), this means “stagnation at a dramatically high level.”
22 sick people were taken to the hospital in the last 24 hours. Intensive care units registered 683 patients, just one more than on Wednesday. A total of 4,614 Covid 19 patients were hospitalized on Thursday. The number of deaths increased by 62. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 2,116 people have died as a result of a Sars-CoV-2 infection.
The effects of the “hard” lockdown, which has been in place since Tuesday, are not yet evident in the number of infections, but the partial lockdown, which has been in effect since November 3, has already taken effect. The number of new infections each day remains dramatically high, the Health Ministry said.
On Thursday, the number of confirmed active cases rose to 77,026, 130 more than on Wednesday. This means that it has stayed at around 77,000 since Nov. 13, compared to around 72,100 on Nov. 12.
The weekly average of new infections decreased
On average, 6,720 new infections were added every day during the past week; last Thursday, this value was 7,018. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants through Thursday was 528.5.
Since the start of the pandemic, 228,683 people across Austria have tested positive, 149,541 are considered to have recovered.
Most of the new infections were back in Upper Austria on Thursday. 1706 new cases have been reported here in the last 24 hours. Vienna recorded 1,188 new infections, Lower Austria 985 and Tirol 913. Styria introduced 726 new cases to the EMS, Salzburg 495, Carinthia 482 and Vorarlberg 355. In Burgenland, 145 new infections have been added since Wednesday morning.
Aggravated situation in nursing homes
In nursing homes and nursing homes, the second corona wave hits much harder than the first. More than half of all corona deaths (323 out of 607) have been in households in the past 40 days alone. In Burgenland, 100 percent of deaths from corona in households were recorded in the period from October 1 to November 12, in Lower Austria it was 91 percent and in Upper Austria 82 percent.
The Health Ministry reported in a broadcast Thursday that the intensity of the exercise was clearly lower than the previous week, but still significantly higher than during the first lockdown in the spring. Anschober, therefore, made a new appeal to the population to massively reduce contacts and use the possibilities of the home office.
