Julia Herr asks for food donation – News

“Every year, 577,000 tons of food ends up in the garbage instead of on our plates,” said SPÖ environment spokeswoman Julia Herr. She now wants to make a donation.

“We can no longer see this waste. We have to rethink here from the field to the kitchen,” Herr said in a broadcast. In the first step, clear legal requirements are needed in the food trade, which would stop the removal of edible food.

“Instead of landing in the container, supermarkets should donate food to nonprofits,” says Herr. France is a role model here. “The corresponding law applies there to supermarkets with more than 400 square meters. In Austria, only 12,000 of the approximately 90,000 tons of classified food are currently donated,” Herr said.

The state must support distribution.

Too little, the MP says: “More than 600,000 people in Austria have trouble getting good, balanced food. It is intolerable if food that cannot be sold but is fully edible simply works out.” If existing organizations do not have the capacity and infrastructure to distribute discarded food, support from the food trade and the state must be provided.

But also: if less food ends up in the garbage, less must be produced. “This is good for climate protection,” said Herr. Therefore, the goal should be a reduction in waste food “and not just recycling, for example, as animal feed.” Shorter production routes and the regional economy would play a decisive role here.
