Johnson sees a high probability of “no deal”

There is a high probability that there will be no deal for the time after his country leaves the EU, Johnson said Thursday. “There is now a high probability that we will get a solution similar to Australia’s relationship with the EU and not one that corresponds to the relationship between Canada and Europe,” Johnson said. “That doesn’t mean it’s bad.” However, he would travel to Paris, Brussels or Berlin to reach an agreement. The British pound gave way, according to Johnson’s statements.

So far, the EU has only one framework agreement with Australia, which, among other things, affects technical barriers. In general, trade between Europe and Australia is carried out on the basis of the World Trade Organization (WTO). On the contrary, there is a free trade agreement between the EU and Canada.

Britain and the EU have set a deadline of Sunday. Then it must be decided whether a trade deal is possible for the period from January 2021. But the EU is already preparing for the worst case scenario for the economy: a hard break at the end of the year, without clarifying the future relationships between them.

Britain officially left the EU at the end of January, of which the Kingdom had previously been a member since 1973. The transition phase ends on December 31, during which time Britain must still apply EU rules.
