Software developer John McAfee faces a lengthy prison sentence in the US on charges of tax evasion and unfair advertising of cryptocurrencies. Both the SEC and the Justice Department announced in Washington that they had filed charges against McAfee. The 75-year-old man was arrested in Spain and should be extradited to the United States.
The Justice Department plans to prosecute McAfee for tax evasion and willful failure to file tax returns. The SEC accuses the antivirus software pioneer, among other things, of having recommended certain digital currencies without disclosing that he received millions for it from initiators. In this context, McAfee’s bodyguard was also charged.
According to the indictment, McAfee allegedly did not pay taxes on “significant income” between 2014 and 2018. During this period, he was also active as a consultant, lectured and sold the rights to his life story for documentation, the prosecutor in Tennessee said. If the businessman with British-American roots is found guilty on all charges, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
Adventurous jungle escape
Initially, a statement from McAfee was not available. The tax crime charge dates back to June, but has just been made public. McAfee founded the antivirus software company that bears his name, McAfee, in the 1980s, from which he retired in the 1990s.
In 2012, McAfee made headlines around the world when he was wanted for the murder of his Belizean neighbor. After an adventurous escape through the jungle, he returned to the United States and in the meantime also registered as a candidate for the 2016 presidential election. This year, McAfee initially ran again, but ended his campaign again in March.
